Sheraton Wall Centre Vancouver- Work and Canada Day!

I had another short stay at the Vancouver Wall Centre for work.  The hotel renovations in the South Tower are almost complete, though the North Tower restaurant and the hotel’s gym could still do with some updates.  The city was packed with several cruises and the Rocky Mountaineer train having come into town and many of these groups were staying at the hotel.  As always, the staff were excellent and the location could not be beat.  The Club Lounge is scheduled to be relocated around July 20th to the split level lounge on the 25th floor, but the offerings and space on the 3rd Floor were good and the staff worked tirelessly to accommodate the large number of guests.  I was there over Canada Day and the hotel was a great spot to make the short trek down to the waterfront to see the fireworks.  I also had a few walks along the seawall and over to the Aquarium, which I finally joined since I visit so often, in Stanley Park.  I opted for the Amtrak train back with great views of the water, pay for Business Class for larger seats and priority boarding.  Another great stay and still love the hotel.

Palm Springs and Disney Birthday Getaway - Day 4 Sheraton Park Anaheim

After leaving Palm Springs we made the drive to Anaheim, typically under a 2 hour trip but on the busy Memorial Day Monday, almost 4 hours.  I have stayed at the Sheraton Park several times, a brief 10 minute walk to downtown Disney and the entrance to both Disneyland and California Adventure, it is a perfect choice for those not wanting to spend more on the expensive Disney properties.  The only downside is that unlike the SPG Swan and Dolphin in Disney World, the Sheraton Park does not get the magic hour benefits as it is a ‘friend’ or ‘partner’ hotel, not an actual Disney branded hotel.
This hotel is also in the middle of a needed update, with the lobby being transformed from a 70’s and dated building to modern, clean, and functional.  The large tower has great views over Disney for the fireworks at night, with a few floors having been renovated including the Club Lounge, but with a great number of rooms still to go throughout the hotel. The staff at the front desk was amazing as was the attendant in the Club Lounge. The only downside was the new coupon system for use in the Club Lounge which was a little confusing. The drinks in the lounge were previously free, which people loved, but sadly this benefit has gone.  The Club Lounge has a basic continental breakfast but great and varied offerings at night time. The pool area and gym are also good at the property with ample seating by the pool area.  It is not as flashy as the Disney properties but it is a great SPG choice and especially good for those on a budget.  Try to get a room facing Disneyland for fireworks views and the number 11 rooms are the suites.
Our stay was pretty brief with a snack in the Club Lounge then drinks in downtown Disney at Uva, then early to bed so that we could be up early for a quick snack in the lounge, a to go coffee, and then a day at the park.  We grabbed an Uber to LAX for $50.00, typically I would recommend flying out of Long Beach or SNA, but at night time we were going against the traffic.  As always a great stay here, but I cannot say enough about the staff, they went above and beyond with the suite upgrade and drink coupons for my birthday.  Much appreciated!

Palm Springs and Disney Birthday Getaway - Day 3 Parker Palm Springs

We left the Riviera early so that we could make our way over to one of my favorite hotels, if not my favorite hotel in the SPG collection.  I am a huge fan of this hotel, and even on the busy Memorial Day weekend the staff was amazing.  The grounds of the property are some of the most relaxing I have ever seen, with mini-golf, giant chess, croquet, and various other activities for the young and old alike set throughout a wonderland type atmosphere. Two outdoor pools and the indoor pool and spa at the Palm Spring Yacht Club add to the amenities of the property. The suites in the main building are great, but many people love the terrace suites with patios leading right out to the north pool.  Brunch at Normas is a town favorite but priority is given to hotel guests so stop in and ask for an outdoor table on the terrace at check in or early in the morning.
We checked in early and were ushered out to the pool while our room was prepared.  We relaxed and had drinks at the North Pool which is the more child focused pool with the main pool filling up early each morning on busy weekends.  After only an hour they called to let us know the room was ready, but we were so relaxed we stayed poolside for a few more hours.  When we finally went in we were upgraded to one of the upstairs Suites, with huge open living and lounging areas all decorated by Jonathan Adler, a large patio overlooking the peaceful grounds, and two bathrooms on opposite sides of the room, one being a ‘party shower’ bathroom.  Our bags had been dropped off and a bottle of champagne on ice had been left for us as a birthday treat for me.
We headed out for a relaxing hour in the indoor pool, hot tub, and sauna/steam complex that is the Palms Springs Yacht Club, the luxurious and tranquil spa complex in the hotel.  Afterwards we showered and headed out to Tropicale, one of my favorite restaurants in the city.  From there is was just a walk around the downtown area which I had never seen so packed, even over Coachella, White Party, or Palm Springs Pride, some of the main weekends in the city.  The newly inaugurated flights from New York and Toronto were definitely bringing a different group from the typical West Coasters that frequent Palm Springs, I had never seen so many families on the one hand and fraternity/sorority groups on the other.  It was almost as though Spring Break and Disneyland had collided in the desert and the restaurants and bars of Palm Springs were bursting. We stopped at the casino briefly which is always fun before heading back in an Uber to the hotel.
The next morning we did my favorite hike just across from the Parker, the Araby Trail.  This is one of the best hikes, not too difficult and not too grueling if done early before Palm Springs really heats up.  The views from here are amazing.  After it was brunch at Normas on the patio, the Breakfast Quesadilla is a must, and then a few more hours before the pool, a trip back to the Palm Springs Yacht Club, and then a late departure thanks to the late check out the hotel provided.
As always an amazing property and stay, the staff were wonderful and even when completely full, every guest is made to feel relaxed and special.

Palm Springs and Disney Birthday Getaway - Day 2 Riviera Palm Springs

I love the Parker in Palm Springs but on my first night over the busy Memorial Day weekend I could not get a room there so I opted for the other Starwood Hotel close to town, the Riviera. I had stayed once before right after the hotel was renovated and the service had been terrible. There have definitely been improvements in terms of service, with friendly staff at the pool, at the front desk, and throughout the property.
The hotel has a very modern feel with a younger and trendier vibe then many of the other hotels which can gear towards an older clientele at times. The downside was that the property was so full so there was fighting for lounge chairs and a very mixed crowd of party groups trying to mingle with families with small kids. I still like the renovations and the location is excellent since you can walk to town, unlike any of the other Starwood properties in Palm Springs.  There are two pools, one main pool with the larger bar and the small gym overlooking it, and then the farther out pool which also has a bar but this is more of a quiet pool with a children focus.
We had been given an upstairs suite overlooking the grounds not the pool, something I was pleased about since it was quite noisy at the pool area.  The room had a large sofa and sitting area, big balcony, and a very large master bedroom and bathroom. The restaurant was quite nice for breakfast but the staff could barely keep up with the sheer volume of guests.  It was a great stay and good property but it was a little too busy, I think it would be a much more relaxing spot on a non-long weekend, but a good value if the Parker is out of reach financially and you do not want to stay at one of the Westin properties which are focused to golf and kids activities.
